So
my first introduction to this new town was when I was driving down
the highway looking for my turnoff and I put my blinker on where
there wasn't actually a turnoff, and when I did pull into the right
place, the truck in front of me sped past and flipped me the bird
out his window. Nice. Apparenlty there is a giant "locals only"
sentiment here, so much so that a few weeks ago kids were caught
spraypainting that saying onto the sides of cars parked at the beach.
Nice #2. Otherwise, the seafood is fresh, the population is low,
the beach is close, and it takes 12 minutes to drive over the hill
into civilization. As long as nobody spraypaints me I have high
hopes.

The
baby has a favorite song. This totally cracks me up, the idea of
a fourteen month old actually liking one song over others. I'll
play the whole They Might Be Giants Here Come the 1-2-3s album for
him, and he likes it and bops his head along with most of it, but
then "Seven Days of the Week" comes on with its initial
trumpet and beats and he smiles and sways and dances and it's kind
of hilarious. And it makes sense that he likes it because his mother
is allergic to work and that's what the song is about.

We
did this crazy thing where we bought a 52 inch TV and DirecTV (which
is being installed right now) the other day. This will make up for
the fact that I've been without TV for nine days, which includes
the night Paula Abdul went crazy on Idol, also this past week's
Idol where Jack Johnson-lite was voted off, two Top Chefs, an Office
and a 30 Rock. The absence of television has made me realize that
these are the shows I can't live without. And 30 Rock, not to talk
about TV too much, but how does it keep getting better? I haven't
laughed so hard in so long as I did when Kenneth sniffed the shots
of booze and said "Hill people milk? I've been drinking this
since I was a baby!" That reminds me that in another world
I used to go to parties and he was there. Now instead rednecks flip
me off.
